The music and song of David had clearly helped to relieve Saul. What was initially meant to be a temporary trial or test must thus now have become permanent. David was used by the Lord to do good for Saul and prevent him from falling apart entirely.1 The continued presence of David at court would also have given him an opportunity to make important personal and political connection, in preparation for his eventual rule as king.2
