For the first time in this Psalm, the author mentions his enemies: let them be put to shame who want to kill me. Lord God, take care of them so that they turn away shamefully. To snatch away my life
can also mean that the enemies try to break the bond the author has with God, so that he dies spiritually.
This verse contains two parallel sentences with the same meaning. Let those who seek my misfortune be turned back ashamed, those who are glad of it. This desire of the enemies stands over against the delight of the author to do God’s will (Psalm 40:8).
