Our service of God should not be motivated by the expectation of being rewarded in this life with health and prosperity. We should delight to keep God’s laws because they are good and pure and holy, not because we hope to gain material blessings. Our service to God should not have the character of bartering, where we offer service in the hope of earning some blessing. Rather, our service to God should have a character of thanksgiving for gracious blessings (both for this life and the life to come) that have been purchased by the precious blood of Christ, and freely bestowed on us, unworthy sinners.
