Commentary on Psalm 44:4 (Summary)

Psaume 44:5 (NEG79)

5 O Dieu! tu es mon roi:Ordonne la délivrance de Jacob!

You are my King, O God—these words emphasizes God’s greatness. And with that the Lord is being honoured. It can be interpreted as a prayer, but also as a confession: bring complete salvation for Jacob. Based on the earlier deeds of the Lord, he expresses this plea: let Jacob be free again. The rationale for this is already found in Psalm 44:3: you delighted in them.

In Deuteronomy 4:7 we find a comparison with the great nations: “For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?”

Jeremiah 2:2: “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord, ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.” Hosea 11:1: When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
