The troublemakers are the sons of Belial
(see 1 Samuel 2:12).1 In light of Saul’s hesitancy, they refuse to bring gifts that recognize him as king.2 In doing so, they question the Lord’s selection and show themselves to be rebels.3 Graciously, rather than having them killed, Saul acts diplomatically and keeps his silence.
