Did the Sanhedrin sentence Stephen to death?

Actes 7:57–58 (NEG79)

57 Ils poussèrent alors de grands cris, en se bouchant les oreilles, et ils se précipitèrent tous ensemble sur lui,

The reaction of the Sanhedrin show they had no arguments against what Stephen was saying.1 Most commentators understand that the trial was stopped then and there with Stephen undergoing a mob lynching seeing as there is no mention of a formal procedure.2 According to John (John 18:31), the Sanhedrin did not have the power to put anyone to death. The Romans did not allow them that liberty. In this instance, they may have simply chosen to ignore Roman authority and hoped that there would be no repercussions.3
