Commentary on Psalm 57:1 (Summary)

Psaume 57:1 (NEG79)

1 Au chef des chantres. «Ne détruis pas.» Hymne de David. Lorsqu'il se réfugia dans la caverne, poursuivi par Saül.

David asks God to have pity on him. His repeated pleas are to be expected in the light of all he had to endure at the hands of Saul. Likewise, we also may feel the need to repeatedly ask God for deliverance, and we need not be embarrassed about it.

The confession in the second part of the verse is typical of David. He did not depend on his followers or his popularity, and did not take matters into his own hands, but instead waited patiently on God. As a chick huddles under the wings of his parent, David found safe refuge in God.

David knew that God had promised better times. Although he did not know how long the destruction would last, he trusted Yahweh’s promises.
