Why does Peter refer to the people as "brothers" when there were also women present?

Acts (Actes) 1:16 (ESV)

16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

The phrase brothers would have included the women who were present. Peter is using this term based on the conviction that God’s people are part of one family.1 Later it would be used as a form of address in many of the New Testament letters.
