The structure of 1 Peter 1:3–12

1 Pierre 1:3–12 (NEG79)

3 Béni soit Dieu, le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui, selon sa grande miséricorde, nous a régénérés, pour une espérance vivante, par la résurrection de Jésus-Christ d'entre les morts,

Three aspects of the subject of salvation provide the basic structure of 1 Peter 1:3–12. 1 Peter 1:3–5 draws out that this salvation is already a reality, though earthlings do not yet experience the fullness of this reality. In 1 Peter 1:6–9, Peter draws out that the reality of this salvation gives perspective to the trials experienced in this life. Finally, in 1 Peter 1:10–12 the apostle shows how the prophets of old and even the angels of heaven were focused with great anticipation on the very salvation the saints of the dispersion now possess.

Interestingly (but perhaps of little significance), these three subsections also parallel (in a different order) the three Persons of the Godhead mentioned in 1 Peter 1:1–2. 1 Peter 1:3–5 points to the work of God the Father, 1 Peter 1:6–9 the work of God the Son, and 1 Peter 1:10–12 the work of the Holy Spirit.
