Genesis 2:4-25 can be divided as follows:

  • Genesis 2:4: The heading of the following story (Genesis 2–4) describes the developments that took place in the very good world that God had created (as related in Genesis 1).

  • Genesis 2:5–7: These verses describe the circumstances surrounding Adam’s formation and tells how Adam came into being.

  • Genesis 2:8–14: This part informs us about the garden with the trees God made and how the garden was watered. Verse 8 introduces the following verses by first giving a summary.

  • Genesis 2:15–17: These verses relate how God put Adam in the garden, gave him his task, and forbade him to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

  • Genesis 2:18–25: This last part describes how God dedicated Adam to name the animals in order to discover that he needs a helper fit for him. Then the creation of Eve and Adam’s overjoyed response follow. Verse 25 makes a conclusion in the light of marriage. Verse 26 closes with a description of how Adam and Eve lived together, unconcerned with an open intimacy without shame.
