He walks to a fig tree “to see if he could find anything on it.” He does not expect to find figs because it was not the season for figs
(Mark 11:13). He has to approach the tree to see if there was something to eat. Why? In Passover time (some months before harvest time) small flower buds were on the tree, which travellers who passed by appreciated to eat. No buds in springtime results in no figs in summertime. The tree is barren, although it has leaves.
