The book of Exodus reveals Moses’ special position as a covenant mediator. This unique role is seen when Moses draws near to the Lord on Mount Sinai as thick darkness surrounded the mountain (Exodus 20:21; Exodus 24:15–16, Exodus 24:18). The events of verse 1 parallel the events in the book of Exodus.
