1. Revelation 21:3 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Should it be “people” or “peoples”?

Revelation 21:3 (ESV)

3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

Some manuscripts here have a different reading: “They will be his peoples.” This reading has some preference because the covenant of the Old Testament was with the people of Israel (Exodus 19:5–6). The new covenant in the blood of Christ is with all the peoples of the earth, with all who call upon the name of the Lord. Revelation 21:24 reads, “the nations,” which is also plural.
