Where did the mountains disappear to?

Revelation 16:20 (ESV)

20 And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found.

If islands are elevations on lands under water, mountains are elevations on land above water. The magnitude of earth’s response to God’s wrath being poured on the air leveled the above-water elevations as much as it leveled the below-water elevations.
