How did farming work in the time of the New Testament?

Mark 4:3–9 (ESV)

3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow.

This parable gives us an example of how farming worked at the time when Jesus was alive. Farmers would till the earth and then scatter seed using their hands. They would not, however, be able to see what kind of soil their seed has fallen on. They certainly did not deliberately throw their seed on rocky soil or hard ground.
