Who was Joseph of Arimathea?

Mark 15:43 (ESV)

43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

The only information we have of this Joseph is that he was a member of the council, and was looking for the kingdom of God. Presumably he did not agree with the decision to have Jesus condemned for blasphemy (Mark 14:53–65). He may have known Jesus personally and he certainly had great respect for Jesus, since he was willing to bury him in his family tomb.1
