Commentary on 1 Kings 16:5 (Summary)

1 Kings 16:5 (ESV)

5 Now the rest of the acts of Baasha and what he did, and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

1 Kings 16:5 is an example of the writer’s usual procedure when he is concluding his narrative concerning a particular king. He directs his reader to the source of more information concerning that king. In this case, it is “the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel." We are not to confuse this source to the Books of Chronicles in the Bible.

The author tells us that we would find there the rest of Basha’s acts, his deeds, and his might. The word for might here is a word that means something like male strength, military strength, bravado, superiority, victory. No details are mentioned about these powerful deeds; we only read a reference to another book. The writer of the book of Kings does not aim for a complete overview of someone’s great achievements but values a kingship mainly on the responsible management of the religious life of God’s people. That is what you are king for.
