  2. Exposition

What does it mean for the morning star to rise in the heart?

2 Peter 1:19 (ESV)

19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,

Upon a first reading it might seem as if Peter suggests that the return of Christ will be a subjective event which is perceived only in the heart. However, elsewhere Peter clearly states the apocalyptic nature of Christ’s return (2 Peter 3:10–13), so it is very unlikely that he is speaking out of character and now focusing on an internal inner light. Most probably he has in mind the idea that, after the coming of Christ, there will be no need for prophecy (Scripture) since the rising of Christ in our hearts gives full knowledge (see 1 Corinthians 13:8–10).1 This is consistent with the prophetic idea of God’s law being written on the hearts of believers (Jeremiah 31:31–34). The prophetic words will no longer be necessary once Jesus returns because believers will be in a full and complete relationship with God.
