This is bad money, in every way. Its origin was the house of Baal-berith, the local pagan temple where Baal was worshipped. But Abimelech does not therefore refuse the money, or for that matter destroy the Baal. Instead he uses the Baal to further his aims. This money was blood money.1 He bribes mercenaries to massacre his seventy brothers. Abimelech does not express any belief in God.
4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him.
