Steadfastness (perseverance) or endurance is the ability to hold out or bear up in the face of difficulty—to remain steadfast in times of suffering or temptation (Luke 21:19; Romans 5:3–5; 2 Corinthians 1:6; Colossians 1:11; 2 Thessalonians 1:4; 1 Timothy 6:11; Titus 2:2; Hebrews 12:1; James 1:3–4; Revelation 2:2–3). In this context Peter is focusing especially on endurance amidst the pressures of temptation, since the heretics sought to draw believers into error with their immoral practices. The source of Christian endurance is hope in God (1 Thessalonians 1:3).1
