How do the disciples interpret Jesus' words regarding the leaven?

Mark 8:16 (ESV)

16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread.

The disciples do not listen and think carefully about what Jesus said to them. They only hear the word leaven and think he must be talking about bread and the fact that they forgot to bring enough loaves with them.
