In previous chapters John had described a series of “sevens,” that is, the seven letters of Revelation 2:1 – 3:22 (with an introductory paragraph in Revelation 1:9–20), the seven seals of Revelation 6:1 – 8:1 (with introductory material in Revelation 4:1 – 5:14), the seven trumpets of Revelation 8:6 – 11:15 (with introductory material in Revelation 8:2–5), plus the “signs” of heaven in Revelation 12:1 – 14:20 (with introductory material in Revelation 11:15–19). In Revelation 15:1 John relates a vision of “another sign” in heaven (connecting with Revelation 12:1, Revelation 12:3), consisting of another set of “sevens,” that is, seven angels with seven plagues (and seven bowls). This final set of “seven” forms the climax of the previous “sevens.”
1 Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing, seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished.
