Commentary on Proverbs 22:13 (Summary)

Proverbs 22:13 (ESV)

13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!”

Sluggards give lame excuses for their lack of productivity. They do not even have the integrity to confess their laziness, and honestly proclaim their refusal to work. Thus they are not only lazy, but they also lie. They want us to believe that they would work if there were no obstacles. But true work entails successfully labouring around or through obstacles. Thus, whether the lion is real or imaginary, the Bible teaches us to despise such excuses, and by faith to work for God. David never let a lion stop him from his work (1 Samuel 17:34–36). Should we?
