Is David in prison?

Psalm 142:7 (ESV)

7 Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name! The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me.

"Prison” is here a metaphor for his frustrating situation, forced into hiding and cut off from normal life.1 In this cave, he feels as if he is in prison.
