What does Jesus’ statement clarify?

Mark 9:35 (ESV)

35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

Calling the twelve together did not result in answering the question as to who is the greatest; what followed was only a statement about the way one can become the greatest.1
