Relation Word and Spirit

1 Thessalonians 1:5 (ESV)

5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.

It is common in certain circles to speak as though it is spiritually superior to emphasize the work of the Spirit over against the word of Scripture. The impression is created that the word is inferior, if not dead, and that those who want to be spiritually alive will seek an experience of the Spirit rather than an understanding of the word. Within this mindset, “experience of the Spirit“ is thought to be characterized by the working of miracles, healing, speaking in tongues, prophecy, falling down, laughing uncontrollably, and other supernatural phenomena. Obviously, we cannot and do not wish to deny God’s power to heal and perform miracles, but it is completely contrary to Scripture to set the word against the Spirit. After all, the Spirit inspired the word, and, as Thomas Manton stated, The Spirit of God rides most triumphantly in his own chariot.1
