Why did some seed fail to produce grain?

Mark 4:7 (ESV)

7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain.

The growth of weeds in parts of the field is tenacious, so that those parts are often ploughed under afterwards to combat the weeds. Thus it is quite normal that some kernels fail to produce grain because the soil does not (permanently) accept them.1
