How was John a witness to the light?

John 1:8 (ESV)

8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

John heralded the arrival of the Messiah and the commencement of the new age that will endure until the Lord returns.1 As a witness to the light, his task was to point people to Jesus Christ, to prepare his way by announcing his coming (Isaiah 40:1–31, Mark 1:1–11).
