What did the angel do with his key?

Revelation 9:2 (ESV)

2 He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft.

He “opened the shaft of the bottomless pit.” In the eye of our mind we may imagine a door that thus far had been closed or locked. It is now opened so that whatever might be on the other side can now escape.
