What is the purpose of the seal?

Revelation 7:3 (ESV)

3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.”

A seal was common in the world of the New Testament to indicate a particular article or person as someone’s property. With this seal the Lord was laying public claim to particular people as his; that is why those to be marked are also called the servants of our God.
