What is the significance of the crown?

Revelation 6:2 (ESV)

2 And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.

A crown is clearly a sign of victory. This rider receives the victory crown even before he engaged the battle precisely because victory has already been achieved.
