1. Revelation 14:3 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the significance of the additional phrase “from the earth”?

Revelation 14:3 (ESV)

3 and they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.

After the dragon’s expulsion from heaven, “woe” was pronounced on the earth (and the sea) (Revelation 12:12). This is the part of God’s creation where the dragon pursues the woman (church) and her offspring. The addition of the phrase “from the earth” indicates that the Lamb could save God’s elect even from the dragon’s home ground! These elect are no longer at home upon the earth (1 Peter 2:9, 1 Peter 2:11; Philippians 3:20).
