  2. Exposition

How is this act of Joseph's another sign of his obedience to God's word?

Matthew 1:25 (ESV)

25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

“Jesus” is the name that the angel of the Lord told him to give to the child. There was no choice in the matter. Many expectant parents choose a name for the baby before it is born. Much time is spent perusing lists of possible names, thinking about names in the family, looking at the most and least popular names of the year, and so on. But indeed, parents choose the name.

That doesn’t happen here. Joseph simply follows through on prior instructions. It’s quite possible he did not fully understand the deep significance of this name, as we do today. Yet, he was a righteous man. He expected salvation from God. So he would have known that this name was a very special name. He was designating this gift of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit, as the promised Saviour of Israel!
