1. Exposition

How does the account of Othniel’s career make use of terminology introduced in 2:11–19?

Judges 3:9 (ESV)

9 But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

The key elements applied to judgeship in Judges 2:1–23 are here applied to Othniel. He is raised up by Yahweh; he saves Israel by judging and going out to war. Israel enjoys the salvation he won for them until he dies.1
