What does the beginning of this verse literally say?

Judges 2:14 (ESV)

14 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies.

The first part of the verse literally reads, Yahweh’s nose became hot against Israel. This “conveys in a typically concrete and vivid way the fact that Yahweh is a passionate God…. Things move him, and he reacts!”1
