Matthew 1:25 (ESV)

25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

Joseph has to accept Mary’s son as his own, and he has to assume responsibility for him. Even though the boy is not Joseph’s son, he must receive the place of Joseph’s firstborn.
