1. Revelation 3:12 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does Christ Jesus add that the New Jerusalem comes down out of heaven?

Revelation 3:12 (ESV)

12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.

The coming down of the New Jerusalem from heaven will receive detailed attention in Revelation 21:1–27. In this letter the reference to the origin of the New Jerusalem serves to point up that the redemption God’s saints will receive in the hour of trial does not come from this earth and their future is not from this earth either. He who has the key of David”is able to give his people a much more secure and glorious city than David ever could. In truth, because of Jesus’ identity this future is holy, unique, altogether different from whatever this finite world can offer.
