Nehemiah 5:1–13 (ESV)

1 Now there arose a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers.

Nehemiah 5:14–19 relates Nehemiah’s own generosity during the time of his governorship in Judea. Its inclusion at this stage of Nehemiah’s book provides the example that the richer among the Jews were to follow, according to Nehemiah’s directives in Nehemiah 5:9–11. Nehemiah 6:1–19 returns to the theme of Nehemiah 5:4, namely, the resistance from enemies without.
