What was the surprising result of Paul’s imprisonment?

Philippians 1:14 (ESV)

14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Although his imprisonment alone could have been the cause of diminishing confidence and fear, the reverse is the case. These fellow believers gained extra confidence thanks to the way Paul was allowed to be bold even as a prisoner, and thanks to how God used his chains to advance the gospel into the vanguard of the political leaders.1
