Commentary on Esther 2:18 (Summary)

Esther 2:18 (ESV)

18 Then the king gave a great feast for all his officials and servants; it was Esther’s feast. He also granted a remission of taxes to the provinces and gave gifts with royal generosity.

The crowning and marriage were celebrated with yet another spectacular feast. A holiday was proclaimed through the whole empire. Sometimes in ancient Persia a holiday consisted in a cancellation of taxes.

Amid all these celebrations, who would ever be able to guess at God’s plans? Five years later, he would make Queen Esther an instrument of protection for his people. In all kinds of ways, he raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor (1 Samuel 2:8).
