1. Jeremiah 51:33 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does the Lord say that Babylon is like a threshing floor?

Jeremiah 51:33 (ESV)

33 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time when it is trodden; yet a little while and the time of her harvest will come.”

The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, once again declares his verdict over Babylon, The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time when it is trodden; yet a little while and the time of her harvest will come. The image used here would have been universally understood in Jeremiah’s day. All over people would prepare for the harvest by compacting and levelling an area that is used as a threshing floor. It was a clear sign that the harvest was close.1 This time Babylon’s harvest is not grain, but rather judgment. The Lord is preparing her to face the consequences of her wicked behaviour.
