1. Jeremiah 50:31 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why is the Lord against the proud one?

Jeremiah 50:31 (ESV)

31 “Behold, I am against you, O proud one, declares the Lord GOD of hosts, for your day has come, the time when I will punish you.

The next two verses (Jeremiah 50:31–32) focus on Babylon’s pride. Her power and affluence had made her a proud nation. Babylon believed she could do as she wishes, especially in the way she treated other nations, including Judah. But now the proud one will stumble and fall. There will be no one to lift Babylon up again, no one to come to his (the verbs become male) aid because the Lord will completely destroy him and all that is around him, which is a reference to Babylon’s allies.
