  2. Exposition

Who declares in Zion the vengeance of the Lord, vengeance for his temple?

Jeremiah 50:28 (ESV)

28 “A voice! They flee and escape from the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, vengeance for his temple.

Once again, the theme of Babylon’s judgment is intertwined with the redemption of the Lord’s people. The exiles are pictured fleeing form Babylon as the invasion comes. Their voice is heard in Zion as they declare the vengeance of the Lord our God, vengeance for his temple. Babylon had destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, attacking the very center where the Lord’s people expressed their worship of him. This was supposed to show that Babylon and her gods had defeated Judah and her God. But now the Lord sets the record straight and punishes Babylon for her arrogance. The Lord’s people rejoice not just because of their vindication, but more importantly because the Lord vindicates his own name.
