Temon was either a city in Edom or a region. It seems to be used here by Jeremiah as a poetic way of speaking of the whole land.1 Edom may or may not have had a reputation for wisdom (Obadiah 1:8), but what is questioned here by the Lord is the wisdom of the political decisions they have made.2 They have foolishly rebelled against Babylon but at the same time they have sided with Babylon against the Lord’s people in Judah. Both of these decisions place Edom in opposition to the Lord himself.
7 Concerning Edom.Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished?
