The Lord now gives his response to the dispossession of Gad. The days are coming when the Lord will cause invaders to destroy Rabbah of the Ammonites. Rabbah was the capital city of Ammon. This is no doubt a reference to the Babylonian invasion and all that followed it. The result will be a great reversal, Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him.
Historically, this reversal never took place, though Ammon was ultimately dispossessed of all its land by foreign powers. However, the phrase the days are coming
opens up future fulfillment of this prophecy in the Messianic age. In the end, the Lord will vindicate his covenant people through his promised Messiah. This great reversal, however, will even lead to the restoration of the Ammonites (see Jeremiah 49:6). These promises appear to look to the final fulfilment of the Lord’s plans and purposes for his world.
