Who was Sanballat?

Nehemiah 4:1 (ESV)

1 Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews.

Nehemiah had already introduced Sanballat to his readers in Nehemiah 2:10. He was the governor of Samaria, a district to the immediate north of the region around Jerusalem. His proximity to Judah implied that he had a vested interest in what was happening in Jerusalem.
