Why did the crowd laugh at Jesus when he said that the girl is not dead but sleeping?

23 And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,

The laughter of the crowd was the result of unbelief.1 The mourning crowd laughs at Jesus when he said that the girl was sleeping, for they knew that she had died and they did not believe that he would be able to wake her.2
