It is striking that a ruler, Jairus, here kneels before a private citizen. He does so in expectation that Jesus will respond to his request. He firmly believes that Jesus can generate life simply by putting his hand on Jairus’ daughter. In fact, he does not even ask for a laying on of hands but only for one hand—a mere gesture will suffice. By means of his actions Jairus’ faith is revealed as one that expects Jesus to grant life even to the dead.1
18 While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
