1. Matthew 4:6 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How does Jesus respond when Satan tells him to throw himself down?

Matthew 4:6 (ESV)

6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

In short

Jesus reacts to the temptation to throw himself down by affirming his trust in his Father, and so refusing to test his Father’s promise.

Jesus does not even respond to the temptation itself, because he fully trusts in his Father, and trying to prove and test his Father’s care for him by such an act would in itself be a sure sign of a lack of faith and trust. This temptation was, after all, ultimately aimed at disturbing the relationship between Jesus and the Father.1
