What does the element of water in baptism signify?

Matthew 3:5–6 (ESV)

5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,

Just like we are cleansed by water in baptism, so we are cleansed from sin by the work of the Holy Spirit. (see Matthew 3:11). Through baptism we are renewed spiritually.1

The cleansing water of baptism signifies our cleansing from sin by God (Matthew 3:11).
